Moving to Winter Wonderland:

A Personal Journey

When making the exciting move to Colorado's stunning Summit County, it's crucial to prepare for a cooler-than-average climate. With elevations ranging from less than 8,000 feet to greater than 14,000 feet, the high alpine environment ensures chilly and snowy winter days. To fully embrace and enjoy this climate, it's essential to be mindful of Mother Nature and equip yourself with the right gear. Based on my experience, here are some key elements that made my transition smoother: proper planning, reliable transportation, and appropriate attire.

Living in Summit County so far has taught me that thorough planning before snowstorms is not just advisable, but it's a necessity. Beyond the obvious challenges of cold and snowy weather, venturing out during a snowstorm can be a daunting experience. To alleviate stress, I try to complete daily chores such as grocery shopping and gym visits before any anticipated storm. This proactive approach not only ensures you're well-prepared but also enhances one’s daily mood.

Speaking of preparation, when it comes to driving in winter conditions, the ideal snow-ready car may not exist, but certain features can significantly improve your safety. Look for a vehicle with all-wheel drive (AWD), high ground clearance, even weight distribution, snow tires, and a well-equipped emergency kit. Studies indicate that this combination provides superior road traction, shorter braking distances, decreased chances of getting stuck, and a reduced risk of accidents. Prioritize safety for yourself and your fellow Summit County residents.

Now, let's shift our focus to winter attire. Having warm clothing is paramount when relocating to the county. Consider adding the following items to your winter wardrobe: hats, scarves, gloves, jackets, and at least one pair of warm boots. Layering is a valuable skill to master, providing both comfort and adaptability. Not only does it keep you warm, but it also allows for temperature adjustment by removing a layer or two. Invest in quality boots to keep your feet warm, dry, and secure, preventing slips and falls on icy surfaces. Trust me, the combination of concrete and ice is unforgiving.

I hope you find these insights helpful as you embark on your winter adventure in Summit County and please stay tuned for my next blog entry, as I plan to share how the winter season treats me. Cheers!
